Starting a central theme, specific questions will be put forward to the local staff. Also independent research will be done on living conditions in the area, the environmental issues, and development issues. Before the photo/film crew travels to the region, a researcher will travel ahead to do local research.

Research methods used will be:
• Standard questionnaire for local staff
• A specific questionnaire after evaluation (to research the local conditions)
• Country (or region) research (based on books and Internet)
• Interviews by telephone
• Field research

Possible questions:
• What are the local living circumstances?
• What are specific issues for children?
• What role does water have (scarcity, abundance)?
• What are the geographic conditions?
• What are the main development issues?
• What is the impact of historical events?
• What is the role of the government?
• What is the role of multinationals (including water companies)?
• What is the role of NGO’s?
• What kind of education is available?

Sources:
• Local staff
• Information of local NGO’s
• Universities
• Field research
• Interviews

The research will be carried out by The Network University that has extensive knowledge on the issue (it offers courses on the issues of the water sector, see http://www.netuni.nl/demos/water), by The University of Amsterdam (a comparative study on water access has been carried out), and by Netwerk regarding the visual aspects.
